We all know about how important vitamin D is to our health, especially when it comes to our bones, muscles and immune system. Without it we can develop problems such as osteoporosis, rickets in children, and susceptibility to infections of all kinds, from airborne viruses to bacteria.
I came across some important information this week that I want to relay to you. I believe it was in 2011 when governments were deciding on nutritional recommendations, minimum daily doses of various nutrients.
It turns out that someone made a statistical error in calculating the optimum amount of vitamin D that we should be having daily. Based on this error, it was recommended that we have around 600 IU (International units) of Vitamin D per day. This could be from food (usually around 200-250) and the rest could be through supplementation or exposure to sunlight.
Now, correcting for this calculation error, we should actually be taking in closer to 8000 – 9000 IU of vitamin D per day! At this time of year where we live, it’s even more important because we tend to get bundled up because of the cold and we tend to have less sunlight (shorter days) so our ability to get vitamin D from the sun is lessened even more now.
So make sure to increase your vitamin D supplementation, especially during the winter months. Vitamin D is fat soluble so it’s best to take it in a liquid (oil) form and with food. If you’d like to get some from us, we can place an order for you. It usually takes a couple of days to get to us.
With more people being sick these days, you wonder if part of the solution could be for people to bolster their immune systems with more vitamin D. Of course what’s also good for the immune system is to make sure that your nervous system is in good working order with NeuroSpinal Optimization.
