“Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves.” ~ Bessel van der Kolk
Trauma is the past being kept alive through patterns in the nervous system. Because of this, how we approach the world around us, how we relate to others and to ourselves, as well as the choices we make, all can be affected by trauma. In an attempt to survive, we carry this with us throughout our lives … until we decide not to.
In order that the past not be kept alive we need to change the patterns in the nervous system. NeuroSpinal Optimization is one way to permanently change the patterns that we develop throughout our lives.
There are a couple of common challenges, with respect to trauma, that people experience with NeuroSpinal care. One of the challenges that people commonly experience at first is that they have a hard time to feel the results. They will often tell me that they don’t feel much is happening and they look to me to reassure them.
NeuroSpinal care starts with helping your nervous system rebalance, regulate and heal, so even if at first you may not feel the results happening, eventually your nervous system heals enough to where you are able to feel the changes taking place! It is a truly miraculous feeling to be able to feel your body healing in real time. For some people it just takes longer to feel changes because they are used to ignoring and numbing their feelings and awareness in order to survive.
Another most common challenge in NeuroSpinal care is that as the nervous system heals, some people start to experience the “gnawing interior discomfort” that van der Kolk mentions.
This is completely normal: It is the brain starting to come more online with NeuroSpinal Optimization. And some people react by thinking that NeuroSpinal care is not for them.
This actually doesn’t mean that traumatized people are not a good candidate for NeuroSpinal Optimization. In fact, they are the ones that need it the most. It can take some time and patience to learn to feel safe in your body again. Peace, freedom and fulfillment are waiting on the other side of this process.
This is a truly healing process where you can discover more about yourself, understand yourself better, resolve conflicting patterns and through trust and intuition, create the life you want to live.
The care at the Happy Spine is focused on helping to teach you to undo the habits and patterns of the past that you used to protect yourself and survive. As you do this, you give your body more energy and resources to create new healthier, happier patterns of living.
And a body/mind that has energy and resources can grow beyond its habitual patterns and have optimal health, physical, emotional and mental.
